Senators showed their support to President Rodrigo Duterte's accomplishments and priorities mentioned in his 2ns State of the Nation Address (Sona).

Senators Sherwin Gatchalian, Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino, Grace Poe, and Joel Villanueva agree with the President in addressing the security concerns in conflict-torn Marawi City and upgrading of the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Aquino said the Senate will put the tax reform package being pushed by the Duterte administration under the microscope, saying lawmakers owe it to the people.

He said that there will be proposed changes that will lessen the price effects of the reforms.

Senator Aquino admitted that the Senate cannot accede to the President's request to pass the tax reform package in total.

Government's plan of imposing an excise tax on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline and diesel under its tax reform package will lead to higher prices of commodities, he said.

Aquino said he supports the pronouncements during the Sona that include enhancing the support for the Armed Forces, improving government efficiency, providing free internet in public spaces and some legislative measures like the National Land Use Act, Bangsamoro Basic Law, as well as changes in mining policies.

On the other hand, the Free Internet in Public Places measure will provide free internet access in all national and local government offices, public schools, public transport terminals, public hospitals and public libraries.

For his part, Senator Gatchalian said the President is in the right track in prioritizing the country's peace and security.

Noting the volatile peace and order situation in Mindanao, Gatchalian said it was timely for the President to address the issues of violent extremism in Mindanao and the communist insurgency.

A speedy and decisive end to the various conflicts in Mindanao, Gatchalian said, would encourage strong foreign investments and foster a stable environment for long-term inclusive growth in these impoverished areas.

Gatchalian also said he supports the President's proposed initiatives to enhance the defense capabilities of the AFP.
