BREAKING NEWS! UN Rapporteur Callamard Did Not Respect Protocol In Phil Visit! Palace Offended!

The Malacañang Palace has expressed disappointment at the "unannounced" visit of UN Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard to the Philippines to speak at a policy forum on the illegal drug problem.
According to Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, "We are disappointed that, in not contacting our government in advance of this visit, she (Callamard) has sent a clear signal that she is not interested in getting an objective perspective on the issues that are the focus of her responsibility."

Abella also said that Callamard's visit coincides with the departure of a "senior-level delegation" from the country to Geneva for the 3rd Cycle of the Universal Period Review of the Philippines.

The delegates will be meeting officials from the UN High Commission for Human Rights, where they will "certainly be raising" their concerns with Callamard, Abella added.

"If Dr. Callamard is committed to ensuring due process to our government and a truly objective assessment of our record on an issue of tremendous importance to our nation, she should be in Geneva meeting with our representatives," he said.

However, Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) on Friday argued that the UN Special Rapporteur followed the required protocols in coming to the country, including informing the government.

In a media briefing by FLAG secretary Cookie Diokno stated that "As far as we all know, UN Special Rapporteur followed all of the protocols and all of the procedures required, which means informing the Philippine government."
