Chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo has announced that he would look into the validity of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV amnesty given to him by Ex-President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.
In an interview by Panelo with the press he stated, “There are some legal quarters expressing the same uncertainty or doubt on that. I’ll go over the case”.
Panelo also said that Trillanes could go back to jail if the amnesty granted by Aquino found to be invalid.
“Anything that is not the law can be a precedent. It is always in the context of the law. So kung nagbigay siya ng amnesty na mali, hindi valid iyon,” he said.
However, Panelo cleared that the review of Trillanes’ amnesty was not political persecution. “We are not in the business of persecuting people. We are in the business of prosecuting people who violate the law and as the President says it is his duty to protect and serve the people”.
It should be known that Aquino approved on October 2010 the proclamation granting amnesty to Trillanes and dozens of soldiers involved in the coup d'etat wanting to overthrow the Arroyo administration which voids any of their criminal liability.
