In response to President Rodrigo Duterte's call versus large fish pens that occupy Laguna Lake, Environment Secretary Regina Paz "Gina" Lopez has mandated that the structures to be demolished.
Lopez has mandated the destruction of fish pens wherein many of these are actually not owned by individual fishermen but are backed by large corporations.
According to the Laguna Lakeshore Development Authority (LLDA), 14% of the 100,000 hectares of the Lake have been occupied by fish pens. The lake is supposed to have a carrying capacity of only 8,000 to 9,000 hectares.
LLDA General Manager Neric Acosta said that some 400 owners of fish pens are registered with them, but they have received reports that some of them may be dummies of Korean and Chinese businessmen.
In his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) last month the President has ordered that the number of large fish pens in Laguna Lake be reduced.
