An unbending warning was given by President Rodrigo Duterto to corrupt police officers on Friday, July 1, as he addressed the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the first time after taking his oath as President of the Philippines.
After the assumption of command ceremony of PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa in Camp Crame, Duterte said that he will not tolerate abuses done by the law enforcement agencies.
“Do not bullshit with me but do your duty, I will die for you. Do your duty and if in the process you kill 1,000 persons because you were doing your duty, I will protect you,” President Duterte said to the PNP.
“And if they will try to impeach me, I will hurry up the process and we go out of the service together,” Duterte added, which made the crowd in Camp Crame laugh and applaud.
Duterte also said in his very long narrative about his experiences as prosecutor and City Mayor in Davao that he knows those small and big acts of corruption in the police.
“Let me tell you now, I will not run this country with a corrupt police,” the President said, who is popular for his tough position against crime and criminals.
The President also restated one of his key campaign promises to increase the salaries of the police and military, before the PNP.
