Cotabato City – Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Governor Mujiv S. Hataman has asked for faster boats to beat the speed with which the Abu Sayyaf bandits move in Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi (BaSulTa) with ease.
Hataman also cited that aside from obtaining boats, the government should also enforce strict procedures in issuing permits to boat owners in the BaSulTa area.
When ARMM authorities did the profiling on the ASG, results showed that the group was using boats equipped with three to four engines of 300 horsepower each – making them much faster that “even a helicopter cannot match” when cruising along BaSulTa and other coasts in the country even in Malaysia sain Hataman.
Hataman said that he is willing to met with policy-makers in the creating a “comprehensive” move against the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), saying that the group’s cruilties have negatively affected the development advancements in the ARMM.
The idea of imposing Martial Law in Basilan and Sulu was suggested to deal with the ASG after they recently beheaded two Canadians after ransom payment has failed.
Many of the locals in the ARMM and Muslim Filipinos are against the ASG, but the method in destroying the terrorists needs to be done carefully with the welfare of innocent residents in the area in mind said Hataman.
According to Hataman, in lieu of Martial Law, a “well-coordinated, intensified and participatory” crusade against the ASG can also be done simultaneously in Sulu and Basilan.
