With just a couple days to go before Father’s Day, Sebastian “Baste” Duterte gave a heartwarming tribute to his dad, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
“When I was younger, gipangutana ko ni Papa — kaning panahuna ni, I want to go back in time — he asked me, ‘Kinsa imong number one idol.’ Dayon ni-ana ko, ‘Si Michael Jordan.’ Pa, I want to tell you now, my answer was wrong. Ikaw gyud akong number one idol [When I was younger, Pa asked me—at time point, I want to go back in time—he asked me, ‘Who’s your number one idol?’ Then I replied, ‘Michael Jordan.’ Pa, I want to tell you now, my answer was wrong. You really are my number one idol],” Baste said as the crowd cheered.
“Bisag ingon ani lang ko, I would not be the person I am not now if not for you. I have always looked up to you, bisag ingon ani lang ko, Pa [Even if I’m just like this, I would not be the person I am now if not for you. I have always looked up to you, even if I’m just this, Pa],” he added.
Baste is Duterte’s youngest child with former wife Elizabeth Zimmerman. During the campaign period, the once elusive son of Davao City’s Mayor led events to campaign for his father, making speeches and singing for the crowd. His two older siblings, Sara and Paolo are the city’s incoming mayor and vice mayor, respectively.
