Thursday, with reasons such as practical effects, Commission on Elections session voted 4-3 to extend the deadline for filing the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) to June 30, giving the Liberal Party and several others some relief.
According to a tweet by BusinessWorld reporter Vince Nonato, those in favor of extension were Commissioners Arthur Lim, Al Parreño, Sheriff Abas, and Rowena Guanzon. While against the extension were Christian Robert Lim, Luie Tito Guia, and Chairman Andres Bautista.
Comelec Executive Director James Jimenez said that it's not just the Liberal Party that benefited from the extension.
"The law never intended for the results to be so absurd," Jimenez added. "You have to understand medyo malaki ang maapektuhan ng rule na ito kapag natuloy siya. Titimbangin mo yung evil na gusto mong ma-prevent by forcing them to file a SOCE, versus yung evil na make-create pag hindi nga sila nakapag-file. Paano naman ang boses ng bayan?"
The deadline extension also means no fines will be imposed to the affected party.
